MARCH 2017 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 83 HONORABLE MENTION / MEDIUM KITCHEN HONORABLE MENTION / SMALL KITCHEN HONORABLE MENTION / SMALL KITCHEN C O Z Y C O N T E M P O R A R Y For his remodeled apartment kitchen, the client wanted a comfortable space to relax and entertain, yet one that was also very clean and chic. Designer Christopher Hoover accomplished this effect with materials such as white rift oak flooring and walnut and white-painted cabinets that accentuate the elegance of the macauba marble countertops. The flush range hood maintains open sightlines, and the flush cooktop keeps the surface unobstructed when not in use. The wall between the kitchen and living room was removed, replaced with a peninsula, a move that opened up the space and brings in natural light from large solarium windows nearby. Closing off a hallway door and straightening an angled wall allowed for a more formal entry and an appliance wall. PHOTO: JACOB ELLIOTT S E A S I D E R E F R E S H Along with the traditional challenges of small-kitchen remodeling, this coastal kitchen also had to contend with concrete floors and low ceilings. To create a more functional, versatile space, the designer eliminated the tight L-shaped cabinetry return housing the oven and microwave and captured a small bit of space from the adjacent patio to add a pantry. Open shelving supplies more storage without overcrowding the wall space around the existing window. Two contrasting countertop materials add visual interest and separation between the main surface and the island, while darker trim brings a pop of color against the lighter cabinetry. Finally, the designer found an island hood that was sleek but also short enough for the low ceiling. P H OTO : G R E G R I E G L E R C R O W D P L E A S E R The clients' desire to share their culinary enthusiasm was the chief driver of this kitchen's open, showroom-like design. Vast countertop areas meet the homeowners' wishes for an array of food prep surfaces, a separate eating bar allows guests to feel like a part of the experience, and highly intentional storage provides space for specialty equipment. Among the design highlights are exaggerated, illuminated toe kicks on the island and peninsula that accentuate the suspended overhang, tall cabinetry at the refrigerator/oven wall to continue the uncluttered concept, and a thoughtful layout that ensures wall space for prized artwork.
