That is not a trifle amount, especially for Rus- sell, a kid born in St. Louis, Miss., who realized his dream of becoming a cowboy during his much recorded life in Montana. Under the Big Sky, he became much more than a cowboy; he was a historian, advocate of the Northern Plains Indians, writer, outdoorsman, phi- losopher, environmentalist, conservationist, and not least, artist. In honoring his legacy, hundreds of volunteers offer endless hours of assistance to the numerous events before, during and after The Russell. Slovak says, "Without the hard work and dedica- tion by these community members The Russell simply wouldn't happen." She adds that in 2016, 1,900 hours of time were donated to the events by 212 individuals, including 82 volunteers from Malmstrom Air Force Base. The Russell Sale Committee has 14 core volunteers who plan and implement the events.
