MAY 2017 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 9 COMMEMORATING HALF A CENTURY AS THE LAUNCH PAD FOR BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY CES CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF TECH The First CES—In the summer of 1967 in New York City, CES opened its doors. Featuring 117 exhibitors showcasing technology like transistor radios, stereos, and black and white televisions, CES 1967 kicked off a 50-year legacy of innovation. Under Jack Wayman's guidance, CES grew from trade show with 17,000 attendees is now the premier event for innovation, and oversaw the evolution of what would eventually become the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) TM . CES showcased companies that invented, designed and produced the most innovative technology in the world. Companies that were there in the beginning include Quasar (Motorola), RCA, Sharp, Panasonic and Westinghouse. Audio and stereo equipment were all the rage at the first CES. 1967-69
