gallery: Eleen Auvil, Alex Gonzales, Ron Grauer and Barbara Johnson. Auvil will have a retro- spective of two- and three-dimensional works exhibited Aug. 3-Sept. 5. As exhibits rotate, artists can have up to two pieces hung on the gallery walls. Additional pieces are in the "stacks" in an adjacent space. Members include Mark Farina, a premier plein air painter, painter Erin Lee Gafill (of the family that owns Nepenthe in Big Sur), sculptor and printmaker Albert Paley and painter Eileen Catbagan. The gallery charges no admission, but accepts donations. Paintings of George Beardsley and businessman Barnet Segal, who were integral in the birth of the association, hang over galleries in their name. In 1927, the 19 founding members stated that the association's mission was "to advance art and cooperation among artists, secure a per- manent exhibition space, and promote greater fellowship between artists and the public." After surviving the Great Depression, they made great business choices, too. "The association bought the [current] build- ing," explains Aberg. "I can't imagine what the rent would be today. They made some really wise decisions." From August 1-31, raffle tickets for 6x6 inch minia- ture artworks done by approximately 80 CAA mem- bers will be for sale. Winners will be drawn during the first week of September. CAA members receive five free tickets. For others, $5/ticket or $20/five tickets. The Carmel Art Association is located on Dolores btwn. 5th and 6th in downtown Carmel, and is open from 10am-5pm daily.
