New Resources Geared Toward Wellness Traveler s B Y R E N E E B R I N C K S C armel's scenic downtown has long attracted travelers looking for leisurely, pedestrian-friendly activities. Now, a new guide inspires guests interested in wider adventures. The free "Locals' Guide to Scenic Runs, Hikes & Walks In & Around Carmel-by-the-Sea" high- lights more than 20 regional outings, complete with maps, photos and information on directions, trail length, dog-friendliness and other features. "Wellness travelers are looking for active, immersive experiences," says Visit Carmel Executive Director Amy Herzog, who worked with Burghardt + Dore Advertising to publish the booklet. "This guide contains everything they need as they explore." Visit Carmel has also par tnered with American Olympian and author Jeff Galloway on a running retreat series that kicks off this November. Whether training for a distance event or recharging a regular exercise routine, attendees will participate in guided runs and receive advice from Galloway and Carissa Bealert, a television host and registered dietitian. "People vacation to unplug and recharge, and the destination they choose should have a posi- tive impact on those efforts," says Herzog. "These retreats will help participants boost their physical and mental wellbeing in a beautiful setting." The new trail guide is available at Carmel hotels and the city's visitor center.
