B efore the record-setting auto auctions began pitching their mega-tents, before the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering flew into Carmel Valley, Before the Exotics on Cannery Row rolled in and before the Rolex Monterey Motorspor ts Reunion at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca (indeed, before Mazda was even a car company) chugged in, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was staged on the third Sunday of August. This is the granddaddy of Auto Week events, and continues to hold top honors as the undisputed classiest of classic car affairs, both on the Monterey Peninsula and across the globe. It's a grand ballet, acted out along the 18th fair- way of the Pebble Beach Golf Links: dozens of the finest examples of the art of automobile design are polished and meticulously detailed, their own- ers sitting proudly by as celebrities, judges and the general public ooh and ahh over their cars' cher- ished chassis. The revving of engines is punctuated by the popping of Champagne corks as the exhaust of exotic engines mingles with the aro- mas of gourmet cuisine. An army of more than 1,000 volunteers plus paid workers toil behind the scenes at the Concours d'Elegance. Chief Judge Chris Bock says: "It's the most beautiful setting for a car show in the world." 186 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S U M M E R / F A L L 2 0 1 7 Photo: Kimball Studios / Courtesy of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
