Toad the Wet Sprocket Friday, Aug. 4, 7pm Golden State Theatre, Monterey S ince they broke up back in 1998, fans of Santa Barbara-based Toad the Wet Sprocket were dreaming of the day the band reunited. Well, the good news came in 2006 when they started touring small clubs on mini- tours. In 2010, they an- nounced the official reunion and released the crowd- funded album "New Cons- tellation" in 2013. So Toad is back! The band had chart success with Billboard hits "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," and "Fall Down," but fans are also embracing new tunes such as "California Wasted" and the title tune. Named after a fictional band in a Monty Python skit, Toad is ready to make a splash again. www.goldenstatetheatre.com. Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival Aug. 5-6 Monterey County Fair & Event Center T his year is not only the 50th anniversary of the "Summer of Love" and the Monterey Pop Festival, but the 50th year for an event that bills itself as the "Home of Kilts, Celts and Kings." The Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival has lasted this long because of its irresistible combination of pomp and pageantry, feats of athletic strength and agility, thrilling pipe and drums bands, Irish dancing, Celtic music, food, jewelry and crafts, fun and interactive children's games with prizes, sheepdog and duck herding (yes, duck herding!) and, of course, whiskey tast- ing! Sponsored by the Scottish Society of the Monterey Peninsula, this event takes you to Scotland, Ireland and England without leaving the Monterey Peninsula. www.montereyscotgames.com or 831/682-2022. Monterey Car Week Aug. 11-20 Various locations around the Monterey Peninsula I s it even possible that the so-called Monterey Car Week is getting bigger? Every year it seems like another event is added to the already extensive list of exhibits, races, concours, rallies, auctions, show-and-tells and social events. The centerpiece and grand finale will remain the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, the event that more or less started it all. Personal favorite though: the funky, down to ear th, Concours d'Lemons on Aug. 19, an ode to the wildest, weirdest and wackiest wheels in the world. Organizers call it, "An ugly oil stain on the Pebble Beach Auto Week." Admission is free, but the sights are priceless. And, you get exactly what you pay for. www.seemonterey.com/events/sporting/concours, www.concoursdlemons.com. Sand City West End Celebration Aug. 25-27 Streets of Sand City T he West End Celbra- tion, a celebration of the arts on the streets of Sand City for 16 years, has be- come one of the marquee events on the Monterey Peninsula, up there with the Jazz Festival and Car Week. This year, in tribute to the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the Summer of Love, '60s bands David LaFlamme and It's a Beautiful Day and Big Brother and the Holding Company will headline shows, the for- mer at the Friday night kickoff party (with WildCard and Amy Warren) and the latter to close out Sunday's main stage show. A number of acts are still being finalized for the main and satellite stages. Music is just a part the festivities, with more than 100 artists, artisans and vendors, as well as street performers, art exhibits and interactive exhibits adding to the spirited com- munity vibe of peace and love. www.westendcelebration.com.
