out 2017, with several highlights planned during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August. Of special note: a display featuring Pete Lovely's 500 Ferrari Testarossa, which won Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca's first race on Nov. 9, 1957, along with other noteworthy vehicles that have competed on the track. "When you look at all the people who have made their mark here, it's just amazing. Truly leg- endary drivers have won and lost at Mazda Raceway — everyone from Mario Andretti to Bobby Rahal and beyond," Campbell says. The track's major annual races depend on thousands of local volunteers who take tickets, sell programs, operate shuttles and staff media facilities. As a thank you, SCRAMP donates event proceeds to more than 60 local nonprofit groups that provide volunteer suppor t. Campbell estimates that these organizations receive a total of $200,000 to $250,000 a year, on average. Kathy Hayworth volunteered at the track for nearly four decades. She also served as board president, among other roles, and helped launch the nonprofit Laguna Seca Raceway Fund. While working registration tables on race weekends, she met veteran drivers, celebrity enthusiasts like actor Paul Newman and individuals whose vol- unteering history also spanned several decades. Haywor th remembers many out-of-town spectators who regularly attended Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca events, as well. "This impacts our community 365 days a year, whether through big races or small groups that rent out the track," she says. "When people fill up their tank at the local gas station, go out to eat at night, shop in town or stay at a hotel…it is a huge revenue source." Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca's economic impact benefits the wider community, but a community spirit also helps the facility thrive. "The heart and soul of the track is that rib- bon of asphalt and the people, plain and simple," Hayworth says. The 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion takes place August 17-20. Paul Newman had a passion for driving race cars, as seen here in between two sessions in 1977. Newman had the racing school building that still stands in the paddock built to support his race cars. Thus, it remains named the Newman Building. Jackie Stewart and Phil Hill swap stories prior to the start of the 1966 Can-Am race. Hill went on to take the win in a Chaparral 2E Chevrolet.
