research news Hot-melt 3D printing shows promise in tailoring release profile NOTTINGHAM, UK—Hot-melt 3D inkjet printing may allow manufac- turers to change the release profiles of tablets without altering the formula- tion, according to researchers at the University of Nottingham. They used a solvent-free inkjet printer to load fenofibrate, a cholesterol medication, onto a beeswax carrier to create tablets with honeycomb geometries. By vary- ing the cell size of the honeycomb structures, researchers were able to control the API's release profile. The study was published in the September issue of the Journal of Controlled Release. markets Pharma blister packaging to grow 6.5 percent annually CLEVELAND, OH—The benefits of pharmaceutical blister packaging— including barrier protection, child resistance, security, and its advantages in regard to patient compliance and institutional distribution—will drive the market to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.5 percent through 2021, according to a report from The Freedonia Group.
