Busby: The Regency Ar- chitect of Brighton & Hove (London, 1991), pp. 45-6; 52-5; Theodore Sizer, "John Trumbull, Amateur Architect," Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 8(Jul.-Dec. 1949):1-6. The only other original printing of Busby's plan known to exist, in addition to Shattuck's, was sold recently by a dealer, Boston Rare Maps, and remains in private hands. 2. Theodore Sizer, ed., The Autobiography of Col- onel John Trumbull, Patriot-Artist, 1756-1843 (1841; reprinted, New Haven, CT, 1953). Irma B. Jaffe's John Trumbull: Patriot Artist of the American Revolu- tion (Boston, 1975) is the outstanding biography of the artist. Helen A. Cooper, ed., John Trumbull: The Hand and Spirit of a Painter (New Haven, CT, 1982) compiled essays by several Trumbull scholars, including Egon Verheyen's excellent "John Trumbull and the U.S. Capitol: Reconsidering the Evidence," pp. 260-280. Verheyen did not illustrate Busby's etching nor explicitly state that they reflected an alternative Bulfinch design. 3. Several modern studies of the history of Trumbull's Rotunda paintings begin with Charles E. Fairman's Art and Artists of the Capitol of the United States of America (Washington, DC, 1927), pp. 53- 63; Jaffe, Trumbull, pp. 236-63; Jules David Prown, "John Trumbull as History Painter," in Cooper, Trumbull, pp. 73-90. 4.
