40 | SignatureMT If you're considering building a home, how will you know if a builder is right for you? For Steve and Mary Rosol, it's all about connection. "Matthew Pethel is one of these guys where, at times, I looked at him as one of my kids, and at other times I looked at him as one of my buddies. He was just easy to connect with and easy to talk to," says Steve. From the first meeting to completed construction, you may be looking at a 2-year process. "That's a lot of responsibility," says Pethel, "but I want it to be fun. I like to be part of those memories." He adds, "Steve's vision for the home, to have a generational place for his children and future grandchildren, was a log home. I grew up in a log home and this is all we ever did for a long time so I understood 1) Why they wanted that and 2) We had the experience with putting it together." Pethel takes a client's ideas, concepts and inspirational pictures and puts a team together that can draw it, put it into CAD, price it and figure out materials such as log, timber frames, reclaimed, etc. "The flip side of that," Pethel continues, "is Steve had ideas. The Rosols were very creative and open. Those clients are the most fun to work with. Steve wanted different areas of the house to be inspired by different cultures. So he'd call and say, 'I've got this coming from France…' and it was my job to figure out how this works in their log home. We executed what he visualized." People tend to ask a builder which home is their favorite. Pethel concludes, "In the 400+ homes I've built? It's the Rosol home. It's my heritage, my roots." BEYOND CONSTRUCTION: BUILDING A LASTING BOND Cowhide in the entryway proves the ultimate in resilient materials to snow, mud and dirt. The rug is by Classic Home.
