O ver the past year, it has once again become obvious to me that the human spirit is highly resilient and our drive to help one another is amazing. All of us have been affected by the recent devastating events such as the Wine Country fires, the Las Vegas mass shooting, the hurricanes and floods affecting our friends to the east, and our own Big Sur becoming a virtual island for the majority of the year after unparalleled fire and rain seasons. These tragedies bring forth a call to action to give and help those in need. The philanthropy in this community is something to behold. I see individuals and businesses putting on benefits and in some cases donating 100% of the money raised to people in need. This is nothing new here as our community has always stepped up to raise money for some great causes. There are so many ways people can help and not all of them involve money. Giving is something that can include donating your time or offering services or resources. Monterey County is a melting pot of all types of people and cultures but the fact is, we are all in this together. We can learn from each other and though our families are the things we cherish the most, it is also important to realize that we are all basically the same. Regardless of your social status or income level, religious or sexual preferences, the basic values remain consistent among most all of us. On that note, the most important thing to me is our health. What we can enjoy and accomplish in life begins and ends with our health. Both physical and mental health is crucial, and I am hoping that we all have a healthy and happy coming year. A vacation from tragedies and disasters would be welcomed. We deserve it! I want to personally thank Michael Adams, son of legendary photographer Ansel Adams, for inviting us into his home and sharing stories and his father's images as well as letting us take some of our own photographs. We are very grateful for the opportunity to share some of Adams' photographs and stories with our readers. I also want to thank all of our writers and contributors for your fine work over this past year. Last, but not least, I appreciate the sales team, our advertisers, and my wife Kelli, who really picked up the pieces and took on a ton of extra work after our long-time friend and graphic artist Ruben lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. We all miss you Ruben. In closing, I have been printing Carmel Magazine in Las Vegas for 13 years. My heart goes out to my friends there and I hope you find the strength to move forward. Life is not fair, but we are here for you. 44 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 7 PUBLISHER'S NOTE S T E V E S N I D E R our drive to help one another is amazing.
