la, it was an easy walk to the lake, which is
roughly 1.5km in length. For those not up
to the walk to the main enclosure alongside
the racecourse, horse-drawn carriages are
deployed to allow visitors to arrive in style.
Dawn and I opted for the stoic trudge across
the perfectly flat piste, following family
groups pulling young children on sledges,
many of whom were modelling the latest in
mini-fur fashion, naturally.
Once you've got over the extraordinary
concept of being surrounded by pop-up
champagne bars and grandstands in the
middle of a lake, it's impossible not to enjoy
a sunny day in St Moritz. The racing itself,
with its white kickback and vibrant silks
against the snow, is visually spectacular. To
casual observers, it almost doesn't matter
who wins, just sit back and enjoy the show.
And in between races, there's the very
important business of fur-wrapped peo-
ple-watching to be done.
