Chapters address recent developments in the field, cap- sule shell manufacture, using capsules in clinical trials, gelatin capsules, capsule filling machines, plug formation, mod- eling capsule filling, scale-up, analytical testing of capsule products, excipients, and Quality by Design. Larry L. Augsburger is an emeritus professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, where he was the Shangraw Professor of Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics and served as chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics. He's a founder of UPM Pharmaceuticals and was a senior research scientist at Johnson & Johnson before joining the University of Maryland. Stephen W. Hoag, PhD, is a pro- fessor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Maryland. He earned a PhD in pharmaceutics from the University of Minnesota and a BS in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. Hoag's research interests include tablet and capsule formulation, excipient functionality testing, QbD, tablet coating, coating polymer formu- lation, tablet press instrumentation, and compaction modeling.
