British Open confirmed Spieth's historical greatness, as he joined Nicklaus as the only players to win three major championships ahead of their 24th bir thday. Spieth's surge also continued to reshape how we think about the post-Tiger era. It was sup- posed to belong to Rory McIlroy, who by 2014 had won four majors at the age of 25. But since then, McIlroy has been dogged by injuries, put- ting problems and off-course distractions, some good (a recent wedding) and some bad (a con- tentious, drawn-out lawsuit with his former agent, which was ultimately settled). Spieth is now clearly golf 's alpha male, but in 2018, McIlroy will be encroaching on his turf. Having married a nice American lass, the Northern Ireland native can finally claim U.S. residency and consolidate his schedule on the PGA Tour instead of spending the early part of the year gallivanting across the Middle East.
