Hertrich, and his father, Fred Hertrich II, into the automotive
business. His grandfather worked for more than four decades
as the chief engineer for Buick Motor Company in Flint, Mich-
igan. When Hertrich was about to begin grade school, his par-
ents moved the family to Philadelphia for business reasons.
They subsequently moved to Seaford, Delaware in his son's fi-
nal year of high school after buying a bankrupt Buick-Pontiac
car dealership in 1963.
Hertrich grew up with a love for sports, playing basketball,
football, baseball and golf. He was the point guard on his high
school team that made it all the way to the State of Pennsyl-
