It's just after 10 in the morning in Lexington and I'm at the
Keeneland January Sale waiting to interview Fred Hertrich III,
the new Breeders' Cup Chairman. For weeks I've been trying
without success to meet with him to talk about his new role.
He explains it's nothing personal; it's simply business–literally.
Between him and his sons, Fred IV and Chris, owning and oper-
ating 18 automobile dealerships–and about to add one more–
in four states, helping his wife, Becki, sell her family's public
relations business, buying and selling Thoroughbred and Stan-
dardbred breeding stock, attending the Breeders' Cup as well
as Breeders' Cup meetings and becoming acclimated in his
role, he simply did not have time to sit down and chat.
