Discovering a new racetrack is one of the things I enjoy most in the sport. In recent years, I've ticked off Garri- son Savannah in Barbados, Cagnes sur Mer, Deauville and Chantilly in France, and Capannelle in Rome. But 2017 brought a revelation in Berlin. Hoppegarten was once the Newmarket of Germany, with 1000 or more horses living and training there. But when the country was divided after World War II, it fell behind the Iron Curtain. Its fortunes sank as West German stables were cut off from the track, and as private ownership of race- horses was discouraged. But after the wall fell, and the federal government decided to privatize the track, Ger- hard Schöningh stepped in and purchased it. The work he and his team have done there makes this a track that should be on your must-see list. Back at home, Perry Lefko spends some time with Breeders' Cup chairman Fred Hertrich, who talks about his life, and his banner breeding year in 2017. Chris McGrath made the sacri- fice of leaving wintry England to head to warm Flori- da to check in with the men and women preparing this year's crop of two-year-olds for sales and racing. And finally, Terry Finley (no relation) talks Kentucky Derby, military service, and what the words West Point mean to him in this month's The Last Word.
