On Wednesday night, March 14th, there will be a free public reception where these artists will talk about their own work and the importance of indigenous representation during Western Art Week. On Thursday, the Square hosts international Blackfeet designer, Belinda Bullshoe. Bullshoe is sky-rocketing to prominence in the fashion industry, and became the first Native American to open New York's Fashion Week last year. With Paris behind her and Milan, Italy in her future, she is bringing 20 new dresses to debut in a High Noon Fashion Show at The Square. But her show carries a message: "In Canada, there is an epidemic of missing indigenous women. The stats do not accurately represent how many women are missing. Now, this epidemic is here. The awareness needs to come, too," Bullshoe says. "The fashion show will be marvelous, but I want people to understand the insight. I don't want to bring tears to people, but I do want to bring understanding. This is happening in Indian Country." Special red dresses, interspersed within the fashion show, will represent the missing women and Rachel Crow Spreading Wings, of KFBB, will be onstage to highlight the stories of just some of these missing indigenous women. Scott concludes, "I hope people take a break from all the buckskin and fringe and take the opportunity to really contemplate what it means to be Native and see Native American contemporary work."
