portfolio • 43 Eight artists, mainly from Western Montana, will be exhibiting. "Any water-based medium can be included in the Montana Watercolors society. It can be acrylics and gouache in addition to transparent watercolor," says Paulick. "People are drawn to watercolors because it looks fresh. The water flows on and the color flows over the paper. If you handle it properly, it's very pleasing." For the artistically challenged, Paulick explains, "With oils you usually start dark and go light. With watercolors, the normal process is to start light and go from there. Of course, being a water medium, you don't have as much control over what happens when the water and the paint mix together and how it's going to mix with the color next to it. You learn the technique," just as Charlie Russell did. It's an extreme process of trial and error that few artists choose to master. As a non-profit, the Montana Watercolor Society, does all it can to make participation in shows like this affordable-both for artists and art collectors. "An example of this is Carol Spurgeon opens her house and houses artists so they don't have hotel costs," Paulick says in mentioning a fellow exhibitor, "Watercolor paintings are usually priced less than oil paintings. So that makes it more obtainable by the general public. It can be a really good painting and won't cost $10,000!" At the end of the day, it's not necessarily about how many paintings are sold. Paulick ends, "It's about the camaraderie and knowing you're working together for the same mission: for the Watercolor Society."
