t's March in Montana, and by this time, we're all itching for
the intermittent snow to cease and the bright yellow-greens of
Spring to sprout. But not quite yet…
As part of their third year participating in Western Art Week, First
Peoples Buffalo Jump will host a hike to explore and observe the
ancient arts of pictography and petroglyphs. Park Manager Rick
Thompson says, "Art has been, across all cultures, a common
denominator and it's been around since man has been
creative…since man existed. We do have some rock art here at
the park that's hundreds of years old and is part of our art show.
It's an opportunity to share early art forms with
the public."
This rare opportunity, offered to just 20 people on Saturday,
March 17th, must be done in winter. "We only do the rock art
hike in winter because it's a bush-whacking excursion. You're
clambering around through boulders and brush and it's just
safer to do it this time of year because the rattlesnakes are
denned up for the winter and there's no poison oak to get
exposed to," says Thompson.
