"The only thing that is constant is change," said Heraclitus
of Ephesus.
This statement has never been truer than today.
According to a recent study by the Manufacturing Insti-
tute, more than 75% of manufacturers experienced a
moderate or serious shortage of qualified applicants for
skilled and highly skilled production positions. The study also
found that this skills shortage costs manufacturers up to 11%
of net earnings. To combat this, the Manufacturing Institute
reported that manufacturers invest approximately $1,000 in
training per employee each year ("Out of Inventory" 2-10).
But what drove this change in education?
"The change came from requests by companies with a reli-
ability focus and industry professionals who needed to get their
teams to correctly apply lubrication in the facility. At the corpo-
rate level, organizations need training to impact the business,
but the question comes down to whether an organization is
looking for knowledgeable employees or competent employees,"
says Chris Christenson, director of education at Noria.
"The focus for each organization varies with the different
roles within the facility, but it can be hard to pinpoint because
the requirements are driven by each organization," he says.
