welcomes two new family
practice physicians—
Jamie Broekhuizen, DO, and
Maureen Dela Cruz, MD—

Sandwich.

Probably not! That's why you should remember
good health habits.
"During the winter months, we see a lot of
colds, flu, and sinus infections," says Jamie
Broekhuizen, DO, a family practice physician
with KishHealth Physician Group. "To avoid the
cycle of infection, follow good hand-washing practices.
Take vitamin C or a multivitamin. Get enough rest and plenty
of exercise. Cover coughs and sneezes. These basic instructions
help reduce the spread of illness."
When nasal congestion occurs, Dr. Broekhuizen recommends
using a neti pot to clear the sinuses.
FLEE THE FLU
Group. "An immunization now can be effective
through March. Family physicians, local health
departments and pharmacies often offer low-cost
flu shot clinics, so take advantage of those."
Dr. Dela Cruz also recommends dressing in layers
that include a coat, gloves, and a hat, and using a
humidifier at home because central heating dries
the air and stresses the sinuses.
"When you reach age 65, get the one-time
pneumococcal vaccine," says Dr. Dela Cruz. "In
addition, older people should use handrails and
stay indoors when it's icy to avoid falls."
Another important step to take to prevent seasonal illness is
getting a flu shot.
"Flu season usually begins in November," says Maureen Dela
Cruz, MD, a family practice doctor with KishHealth Physician
