Rent a Classic Car from Monterey Touring Vehicles B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D E ver dream of tooling down the Big Sur coast in a classic '65 Mustang convertible? Channeling your inner hippie in a 1961 VW Microbus? Hitting 88 mph in a DeLorean? Now you can, thanks to Rob and Heather Gardner, owners of Monterey Touring Vehicles (MTV). "Sometimes new cars and their technology aren't all that great," Heather says. The couple's first car was a 1978 VW Bug and after owning many newer, high-tech autos, the Gardners have come to appreciate the simplicity of older cars. The collecting bug struck them hard, and they found themselves the proud owners of nearly 30 classic cars…and counting. "We thought, 'These cars need to be driven,'" says Rob. "Why not let other people have fun?" They created MTV to rent their fleet to the public. It's quite an eclectic collection, including a 1937 Mercedes limousine, a '63 Chevy Corvair, a replica 1965 Shelby Cobra and a 1949 Willy's Overland Jeepster. But the Gardners see MTV as more than a revenue generating enterprise; they have involved their children, ages 10, 14 and 15 to teach them how to start and operate a business. Oh, and yes—the DeLorean comes com- plete with a flux capacitor. For more information or reser vations, visit www.montereytouringvehicles.com.
