As at most top gastropubs, the menu changes daily.
Less usually, but unsurprisingly, vegetarians are well
catered for: for instance by bashed chickpeas on
garlic toast (£14); three-cheese and hazelnut soufflé
(£16.80); or wild garlic gnocchi (£16.80). At the other
end of the spectrum, mind you, three hungry carnivores
can share a shoulder of lamb and gratin dauphinoise
(£57). Though they may want to leave room for a baked
poppyseed cheesecake and rhubarb (£6.80).
If you can't get a table here, you could always cross
the road to a longstanding tapas institution, Meson
Don Felipe. Or take the ten-minute walk east towards
Borough Market, by day a mouth-watering testament
to Britain's culinary revolution, and by night abuzz
with crowded bars and pubs.
And if you get this far, a visit to The George Inn on
Borough High Street would be obligatory—a fabulous
and historic building, much as Shakespeare might have
known it, and conserved for the 21st Century Falstaff
by the National Trust.
