Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce
In 2018, First Baptist Church will be cele-
brating its 200th Anniversary. The church
was started on September 5th, 1818. It was
one of the first protestant churches in the
Marietta community. Over the 200 year
history, it has faced many challenges. The
church has dealt with a fire that burned the
church to the ground, but the worst tragedy
occurred in October of 1971. On that day,
one of the church boilers exploded killing
four teenagers and one adult teacher while
injuring fourteen others. This was a very
dark day in the life of the church.
In spite of all the challenges it faced, it
continues to serve the Marietta communi-
ty. Over the years, the church has strived
to do its part in making a difference in our
community. The church has served free
community lunches, offered financial as-
sistance for those in need, and partnered
with other local organizations to help meet
the needs of those in our community. In
the last two years, the church has become a
Partner In Education with Marietta High
School and joined the Chamber.
In the last few years the church has adopt-
ed the mission to "Strengthen Families and
Faith Forever." The families in our com-
munity are faced with many different chal-
lenges along with their children. The
church is striving to make a difference and
help with the challenges that families are
facing in our community today. They de-
sire to be around for another 200 years
making a difference and serving our com-
munity.
The church will be hosting a 200th Anni-
versary Celebration on September 8th and
9th. Be watching for details about the cele-
bration in the near future on our website.
Chad Mugrage has been serving as Pastor
of the church since October 2012. Chad
grew up in Williamstown and is passionate
about serving our community. He served
churches in Parkersburg, Williamstown,
and now Marietta. Chad also serves in
many ways in our community. He current-
ly serves on the Board of the Washington
County Homeless project as well as an
Ambassador for the Chamber.
