Accreditation On the Rise AACSB International is proposing new accreditation standards at a time when more schools than ever before are pursuingand achievingaccreditation. In the last four years, the number of schools holding AACSB accreditation has increased by nearly 17 percent; those holding EQUIS accreditation, by more than 15 percent; and those holding AMBA accreditation, by more than 25 percent. For some schools, one accreditation credential is not enough. Between January 2009 and January 2012, the number of schools with multiple accreditations increased by 34 percent. And as of December 2012, 59 business schools were accredited by AACSB, EFMD/EQUIS and AMBA. AACSB expects to see certain trends in the next few years. In the U.S., the association predicts only an incremental change in the number of member schools seeking accreditation since the market has begun to reach its peak. However, AACSB expects to see more schools seeking accreditation worldwiderst in Asia, especially as the association continues outreach and education efforts from its Asia headquarters in Singapore, and then in Latin American and Caribbean countries, where more business schools are seeing the value of international accreditation. The number of schools accredited by AACSB, EFMD/ EQUIS, and AMBA has increased in nearly every region of the world between 2009 and 2012: North America Oceania Africa Asia Europe LACC* AACSB 1 28 41 9 481 10 570 EFMD/ 2009 EQUIS 2 13 74 10 12 11 122 3 9 110 26 4 8 160 AMBA World 852 Total number of accreditations: Asia Europe AACSB 2 54 67 15 511 17 666 EFMD/ EQUIS 2 25 79 11 12 12 141 AMBA 2012 LACC* North America Oceania Africa World 6 32 122 29 4 8 201 1008 Total number of accreditations: *Latin American and Caribbean countries Schools seeking AACSB accreditation, by region: North America Oceania Africa Asia Europe LACC 2009 1 50 54 12 76 11 World 204 2010 2 53 57 7 65 11 195 2011 3 57 52 5 52 8 177 2012 2 70 53 8 51 7 191 The number of schools seeking AACSB accreditation decreased from 204 in 2009 to 177 in 2011perhaps because these years marked the height of the global economic crisis, a time when schools might have lacked the resources to devote to the process. However, more schools began the accreditation process in 2012 as the economy improved.
