The Seven Levels to
Lubrication Excellence
E xc el lenc e i s a
gradual process and
not an overnight
transformation. is
article discusses seven stages of orga-
nizational transformation towards
excellence — Survival, Awareness,
Crawling, Walking, Running,
Optimizing and Sustaining. Orga-
nizations may differ in their progress
through these levels, depending on
their pace and strategy. Approaching
these stages patiently is crucial, as
rushing can lead to pitfalls.
The transition through these
stages requires targeted efforts or
"trenchwork," categorized under
four tactical activities - People and
Culture, Lubricants and Lubrication,
Machine Readiness and Metrics and
Condition Monitoring. Progress in
these activities is not always linear
or simultaneous across all levels,
creating a dynamic evolution across
the transformation journey.
The state of these activities
within an organization varies. For
example, a company might be at a
crawling stage in terms of People
and Culture, while their Metrics
and Condition Monitoring might
already be in the optimizing stage.
is disparity among the tactical
activities results in a blended average
representing the overall transforma
-
tion progress.
A standard referred to as ICML
55.1 outlines 12 primary subjects for
optimized lubrication of mechanical,
physical assets, all cross-referenced
to the four tactical activities. us,
any organization fulfilling ICML
55.1 would be at least at Level 5 in
the transformation stages. Further,
a companion standard, ICML 55.2,
due for publication later this year,
will provide more detailed guidance
on achieving compliance with the
ICML 55.1 requirements.
