Olivia Newton-John for MCA Records "This is an outtake from the photo session for the cover of Olivia's 1977 album, Making a Good Thing Better. We were in Las Vegas and the art direc- tor wanted a green, tropical background for the photo… it took a while to find this, because we were in the desert, after all." Jerry Hall for Harper's Bazaar "Mrs. Mick Jagger…from Texas, y'all…this is when she was first going out with him. Everyone on the set just wanted to know what that he was like. Jerry wasn't a full-time model, but it was always interesting working with her because you never knew what she would do…Another example of using dramatic lighting on a white background. I used theater gels and wondered how they would work on a strobe…because I was shooting with film, I didn't know how it would look until it was processed. Now with digital, you can see the results immediately." Liza Minnelli for Harper's Bazaar "She had just flown in from Europe, running a little late. I was rinsing out some cof- fee cups in the sink when she came up from behind and put her hands over my eyes and said, 'hello.' We'd never met, but that playful gesture set the tone for the session. Celebrities can be very self conscious…they'll give you that look they've practiced so many times. But I want more. I'm not interested in photos that look like, 'I'm having my photo taken.' I had some tricks for breaking the ice. For instance, I had a prop camera that was would break into bits when dropped. I'd act clumsy and that would break the ice. Give them something to drink if you have it—sleep with them if you have to. Just get the shot! Liza is not really a particularly pretty girl, but she's full of life and I think this is one of best photos of her I've ever seen."
