"The photogram is the oldest form of photography." 150 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 1 4 Gordon McCall is best known for being the co-founder of The Quail, A Motorspor ts Gathering, the extremely popular and intimate event which happens each August during Car Week, as well as for being a longtime class judge and field coordinator at the famous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The couple also hosts the exclusive McCall's Motorworks Revival Event at the Monterey Jet Center dur- ing Car Week. Besides being one of the most desired parties to attend, the gala raises funds for the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation, which supports the families of fall- en officers. Probably most interesting about the couple, who both grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, is their genuine passion and hands-on approach for the projects and events they are involved in. The McCalls ride and restore —from repairing engines to performing paint jobs—their classic motorcycles and cars themselves. Gordon col- laborates with Molly on special techniques to encase her art. And Molly walks their two German Shorthair Pointers in Garland Park each day, where she finds inspiration for her botanical works. "I have a pair of clippers in every jacket," she says. "I am always pulling over by the side of the road." Both are excellent photographers: Gordon's close-ups of Ferrari steering wheels have found their way into Molly's glass plates, and Molly's unique eye finds inspiration in creating art with old snapshots, vintage children's cameras, and hand painting photographs. While she prefers film to digital, uses a home darkroom, and cre- ates photograms—which employ special paper that she places objects directly upon under light to capture the details—she has recently begun to use modern day techniques.
