What's the connection
between the YMCA and Basketball…
James Naismith (1861–1939), working in the winter months
of 1891 at a Springfield, MA YMCA, was asked to create
an indoor game that would aid fitness during the winter
months. In just 2 weeks the original idea of "basket ball"
was born! With thirteen governing rules and two teams,
players would try to throw a soccer ball into one of two
peach baskets placed high on opposing walls. Naismith had
successfully created a game that combined recreation and
competition by drawing on popular sports of the day like
lacrosse, football and soccer.
