PeoRIA scholARshIP gIft honoRs hUsbAnd the Gustav W. Giebelhausen enDoWeD scholaRshiP foR suRGeRy was established in 2012 by Martha hannah Giebelhausen in memory of her husband. it honors a talented student identified by the Peoria department of surgery entering their fourth year of medical school with an interest in and commitment to the pursuit of a career in surgery. the college of Medicine expresses its deepest gratitude for this generous endowment, which will ensure that impassioned medicine continues through the generous scholarship support of Ms. Giebelhausen. after completing his medical degree Gustav Giebelhausen, MD '43, completed two years of surgical residency and then an additional two years in the army Medical corps, mostly in Panama. Becker, MD '62, of santa Monica, calif, died on Jan 17. a head and neck physician and surgeon, becker served as assistant chief of the va Wadsworth hospital center and on the staff at southern california Permanente Medical Group. a u.s. army captain, becker was an assistant professor at ucla and a fellow of the american academy of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. becker was an instructor of the medical aspects of scuba diving for the aao-hns. becker was also a motorcycle aficionado, classic car owner, airplane owner and pilot, downhill skier, sailor, swimmer, accomplished chef, and "Mr. fix anything." becker was husband to Juanita, who died in 1983, and then to elaine; father of one, stepfather of two, and grandfather of one. David N. Sattem '60, MD '64, Res '70, of eau claire, Wis., passed away on June 17, 2013. born in Peoria, sattem served as a flight surgeon in the u.s. air force. board certified in radiology and nuclear medicine, sattem practiced radiology at sacred heart hospital in eau claire, Wis., and at Myrtyl Werth in Menomonie, Wis. he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and reading, especially World War ii history. but most of all he loved his wife, Geraldine, whom he married in 1964, three children and three grandchildren. Charles D. "Doc" Morehead, MD '64, of Paducah, Ky., died on sept. 15, 2013. Morehead was an accomplished surgeon, a decorated war hero and avid outdoorsman. he was drafted by the u.s. army and sent to vietnam, where he served as a captain in the medical corps. after an honorable discharge, he joined the Paducah orthopaedic clinic, where he practiced until his retirement in 1995. a board-certified member of the american academy of orthopaedic surgeons, he was also a member of the arthroscopy association of north america. Married to his hometown sweetheart, anita sue austin, for 52 years, he is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren. Lawrence M. Cadkin, MD '65, Res '68, of endwell, n.y., passed away on april 28, 2013. he practiced as an anesthesiologist and later as a radiologist. he formed several radiology practices and worked at binghamton General hospital, Wilson Memorial hospital and our lady of lourdes hospital. he is survived by his wife of 33 years, ilene, three children and five grandchildren. Charles E. Kelly, MD, Res '67, of Peoria, died on oct. 6, 2013. born in chicago, he practiced family medicine in havana, iii., for four years, followed by a four-year pathology residency in chicago. Kelly practiced at the va hospital in Kansas city, Mo., and then moved to the Peoria area where he practiced at osf st. francis Medical center. after retirement, he took computer programming classes at the university of illinois and pursued professional poker. he loved books and was passionate about a wide range of topics including history, feminism, math, science, psychology, politics, literature, poetry and medicine. he is survived by three children and two grandchildren. Darryl M. Bronson, MPH '75, MD '76, of highland Park, ill., died on aug. 31. bronson was a dermatologist and dermatopathologist at north shore university hospitals and at northwestern lake forest hospital. chosen as one of the top Doctors in america, bronson was also an instructor in dermatology at the college of Medicine. he served as a member of the executive medical staff at cook county hospital and as director of the dermatopathology laboratory at Rush Medical center. bronson served as vice president- elect of the american academy of Dermatology and past chairman and residency program director at the division of dermatology of cook county hospital; and president of the chicago Dermatological society and illinois Dermatological society. a prize-winning golfer and avid foodie, bronson was married to Pai-Pai cheng, and had one daughter and one stepdaughter. Mable Louise Blackwell '74, MD '78, MPH '86, of chicago, died on Dec. 22, 2013. a member of the alumni council, she served as a clinical associate professor in the college of Medicine and the director of the office of Public health Practice at the university of illinois at chicago. in addition to positions at Mercy hospital and cook county hospital in chicago, she served as the regional medical director for the chicago Department of health, the medical director for the Lawrence M.
