More about The Science and Art of Collection Development The stacks at Garden City Library and Ada Community Library hold thousands of Large Print books. These books are highly sought after and routinely checked out. We are fortunate to have large, vibrant collections, but in order to keep our collection viable and circulating we need to keep current with popular titles. Space in a library is always at a premium, so it is necessary to routinely thin our stacks every four to ten months. We start by reviewing reports gleaned from Web Reporter. We look at circulation statistics and if a book hasn't been checked out within three years, it will probably get weeded. We look to see if other copies are in the LYNX! consortium and how many times the book has been checked out. If we have duplicate copies, we will keep the one in the best condition and weed the other copy. We also ascertain the condition of the books and look to see if they are broken, musty, yellow, ripped, water logged, or dirty. What I love about Thorndike Press books is the durable hardback covers and reinforced spines. The dreaded broken back is a rarity among our Large Print reads so they usually circulate for long periods of time. What do we do with weeded Large Print books? Sometimes we repair our damaged books and send them back to the stacks. Some books are flagged for replacement. Some books are donated to other libraries and senior facilities. The rest are sold at Friends of the Library book sales so we can raise funds to purchase more Large Print books. On a personal note . . .
