He grew up in Saranac Lake and after graduating from Dartmouth College, a stint in the U.S. Army Air Corps and a 20-year career with Weyerhaeuser Co., he moved his family back to the lakes and mountains and settled in Lake Placid. Carter was committed to enhancing the region's quality of life and was deeply involved, serving on numerous boards including the Placid Memorial Hospital Board as Treasurer and as Assistant Chief of Protocol during the 1980 Winter Olympics. He was an avid sportsman and was admired for his good humor and quick wit. Mr. Lockwood's steadfast commitment to improving community is carried forward by his generous philanthropic investments. Upon his passing in 2001, he left a gift to Adirondack Health that continues to grow and produce income that is invested to allow caregivers at Adirondack Medical Center to provide best-in-class care to those treated every day. Carter's son, David, recently said, "An important aspect of my parents' charitable giving was the idea of 'leading by example.' It was always their hope that their generosity might prompt others to do the same."
