NOVEMBER 2015 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 49 • Send a consistent message. Already selling ENERGY STAR certified appliances and electronics? Show that you are doing your part in your own daily operations by displaying the ENERGY STAR at your entrance. • Cut energy waste and costs. ENERGY STAR certified buildings save an average of $200,000 in energy costs over their useful lives, compared to typical buildings. On a square foot basis, small businesses can typically save just as much money and prevent as much pollution as large organizations. • Boost financial performance. A recent U.C. Berkeley study showed that the average transaction price for sales made in ENERGY STAR certified buildings is 12.9 percent higher. • The ENERGY STAR Action Workbook for Small Business and its resource appendices are free downloads offering strategic energy management guidelines, ideas for no- cost, low-cost ways to save, "how to" finance upgrades, work with contractors, and checklists and action items at www.energystar.gov/smallbiz. Earning the ENERGY STAR begins with benchmarking energy use in EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool. Portfolio Manager is free to use and helps you benchmark energy performance; track the impact of upgrades or behavior changes; and generate standard or custom reports illustrating change over time. More than 50,000 Portfolio Manager account holders, representing over 400,000 buildings totaling more than 35 billion square feet, have benchmarked their energy performance—that's roughly 40 percent of the total U.S. commercial building square footage! While certification is available to more than 21 building types, unfortunately not every building can earn the ENERGY STAR at this time. Retail stores that are under 5,000 square feet, or do not have access to individual energy use data (such as a store inside a mall that does not submeter individual store energy use), cannot earn certification. Even if certification is not an option at this time, you can still use Portfolio Manager to benchmark and track your energy performance—and ENERGY STAR can also still help you reduce energy use and share your commitment with your customers and communities. ENERGY STAR offers a library of no-cost tools, resources, and guidance for improving energy efficiency in buildings of all shapes and sizes—as well as free-to- use communications materials, including printable posters, brochures, and banners, web buttons, talking points, newsletter templates, and more, to help broadcast your environmental leadership. For small businesses, ENERGY STAR offers a smart solution for energy management, and it's easy to get started today! Visit www.energystar.gov/buildings to learn more about what ENERGY STAR can do for you.
