Director, Garvin Center for the Cultures & Languages of International Management Programs & Activities These programs and activities will enhance the value of Thunderbird's MBA in International Management, and other educational offerings, by leveraging our integration of culture, language, and business. They will strengthen our brand recog- nition as a provider of unique programs and services to a vari- ety of organizations and students, world-wide. Examples Objectives Create and Disseminate New Knowledge. Build a knowl- edge base on multilingual and multicultural management; research the role and impact of languages and cultures in international business, as well as upon economic and social development; share findings with the academic and the business communities. Prepare future global leaders. Provide instruction on cultures & languages, as well as their influence upon international management, to present and future managers both in the class- room and virtually; advance the scope and quality of language and culture training for the business community. Provide real time solutions to enterprises facing challenges at the intersection of languages, cultures, and business. Offer educational materials, consulting advice, etc. to a wide range of organizations (companies, NGOs, governments) facing global challenges in multilingual and multicultural management. will be to create and lead a first-class, internationally-respect- ed resource for students, scholars, and executives for issues of cross-cultural and language competency, and their relationship to international management effectiveness. The Center for the Cultures & Languages of International Management has sever- al key components: Founded in 1946, Thunderbird is a private institution and enjoys a world-wide reputation as a leader in graduate interna- tional management education. Headquartered in Glendale, Arizona, and with locations worldwide, Thunderbird enrolls a total of 1,400 degree students, provides executive education to 5,000 executives annually, employs 330 faculty and staff, and has an annual operating budget of $60 million. The primary responsibility of the Director, Garvin Center THUNDERBIRD, THE AMERICAN GRADUATE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT include: support for Thunderbird Academic Degreed and Non- Degreed Education Programs, student scholarships, faculty teaching & training programs, student/executive training in languages and cross-cultural communication, workshops & lectures. Research Projects The Garvin Center will provide support for Thunderbird facul- ty for research within the mission and scope of the Center. Support can encompass stipends, office space, research assis- tants, and other resources. The Center supports fundamental research, applied research, and development of instructional materials. Output can take numerous forms, including papers, articles, monographs, textbooks, bibliographies, teaching notes, and electronic material. The ideal candidate: ■ is a highly-accomplished, active scholar and educator with ■ is bilingual and has multicultural experience in an academ- ic and/or corporate environment. ■ has prior experience with the integration of language, cul- ture and business, with a PhD in a related field, such as Languages, Linguistics, Communication, International Organizational Behavior, Cross-Cultural Communication, or Cross-Cultural Organizational Psychology; a compelling record of and enthusiasm for building and leading an academic Center or Department. ■ communicates effectively with various audiences (faculty of different disciplines, students, executives, and funding sources) about both the scholarly and applied significance of languages and cross-cultural competency for internation- al management. ■ is enthusiastic about working with a multilingual & multi- cultural faculty and student body.
