W oman's Place A By Susan L. Ebert I When a non-hunting filmmaker accompanies her lifelong friend into the South Carolina woods, she bags an extraordinary trophy. never understood why she hunts," says Maria White about Kristy Olson Cuthbert, "even though we were high school friends and shared a dorm room in college." And Cuthbert, a professional hair stylist/colourist in Charleston, South Carolina, had even worked professionally with White and her husband Matthew Mebane as key makeup and hair stylist on Mebane's and White's award-winning collaborative short film Tackle Box. "But about five years ago, Kristy started giving me Christmas gifts of some of the wild game she had hunted herself, and sharing with me her experiences in the woods. I got excited about what she was telling me, and about two years ago I went on a hunt with Kristy . . . that's really where it all began." What Maria is referring to is White's extraordinary win at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her short film, The Debutante Hunters, which won the Yahoo!/Sundance 2012 Short Film Award in a field of more than 7,000 submissions. Yahoo! and Sundance Festival movie experts winnowed that formidable field down to 64 entries and then to nine finalists, which were streamed on the Yahoo! Web site between January 19-27 for T he Debutante Hunters cast, left to right: Beverly Mebane Helms, Kacey Bates Patrick, Kristy Olson Cuthbert, Sara Frampton and Susan Frampton.
