THE FUTURE YOU FUND P O S S I B I L I T I E S AS A COMMUNITY, WE HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN how to live for the present moment while planning for the next one. The earliest Jewish settlers of Winnipeg toiled to build homes, launch businesses, and raise their families. At the same time they built community institutions designed to attract newcomers, enrich Jewish life, and sustain a community for the long term. Fast forward to the 1960s and the birth of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. The Foundation's 100+ founders looked back and knew they had inherited an important responsibility. They looked forward, and saw potential and opportunity. We live in the future they funded. Today, your JFM continues to plan for our community's future. Guided by a new Strategic Plan, the Foundation aims to support a future characterized by meaningful community engagement, enriched by strong Jewish institutions, and enhanced by a tireless devotion to improving life in the Jewish and general communities. Below, you will find a series of insights about the FUTURE shared by a cross-section of community members. They share words of optimism, caution, wisdom, and – above all – HOPE. "Growing up in Riverview where there weren't a lot of Jews, I was made very aware that I was Jewish. I stood up for my identity and my people. We have a lot to be proud of as a community and I hope that we continue to contribute as we always have in music, drama, technology, and science." Dr. Leonard KAHANE, 91 Retired dentist; sculptor; daily racquetball player "I wouldn't have decided to return if I didn't think there was something special in Winnipeg. We have a strong sense of community and a great team spirit. The key for a successful future is to harness that spirit to focus on Jewish learning through schools, synagogues, and other organizations. We face challenges, but we have great opportunities." Rabbi Yosef BENARROCH, 57 Raised in Winnipeg; returning from Israel in July 2016 to lead Adas Yeshurun Herzlia Congregation The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba | 2015 Annual Report "We are a community that has wonderful problems. Our waitlist for childcare is so long that we are about to open a new facility – with a waitlist. Any child who wants a Jewish education will get a Jewish education, no matter the cost. It is incumbent on us to leverage volunteer and monetary contributions to ensure we meet the ongoing needs of our next generation." Lindsay SAWYER, 37 Certified Financial Planner; one of the Rady JCC board Vice-Presidents; Harry Silverberg Young Leadership Award recipient
