September / October 2016 24 sun came out. Our joys to finally see sunshine were quickly squelched. The car began to run rough & soon died. My thought was vapor lock. We used our Pat O'Brien souvenir glasses to scoop water from the roadside irrigation ditch to cool the fuel system. This resulted in short bursts of movement until the car died in front of a farmhouse. Fortunately, there was a short gravel driveway, a shade tree & a friendly young man, who was an auto enthusiast who had never seen a Porsche. We described the symptoms and he zeroed in on the fuel pump. After opening it, he found defective inlet & outlet valves – time for new ones. Unfortunately for us, it was Sunday, with nothing open, much less a Porsche dealer within 100 miles. Our new friend knew someone at the VW dealer. He asked him to go to the dealer's building, crawl over the parts department wall & retrieve VW fuel pump parts. While we waited for this to happen, our mechanic's parents came out of their house to get acquainted with us. Such was the hospitality of simpler times. They laughed remembering they too were once newlyweds and sympathize with our problem – some cold ice tea was a big help. An hour later, the Speedster was repaired & ready to go. We tried to pay for their time & trouble, but they insisted that this was their wedding gift. The Speedster served us well during that time in our lives, giving us many fun memories and stories. It was later that year, when we decided that a station wagon was more appropriate for our family to be. Hence, the For Sale Ad placed in the fall of 1962. As you can imagine in those days, Porsches were not that popular in the Midwest & there were no offers. As a last resort, Vincel Motors VW in Clayton, MO offered us $1500 & we took it (see car on their lot with Jim's tears). Our efforts to find our Honeymoon Speedster are severely limited by not knowing its serial number. We have tried Vasek Polak (out of business), California Motor Vehicles License PYA050 (no records that old) & Vincel Motors (out of business). To this day I wonder, where is our honeymoon Speedster? - JIM
