September / October 2016 6 EDITOR'S COLUMN By Stan Thorne We've Come A Long Way DER SPORTWAGEN I was greeted last week at breakfast with a surprise visit from Larry Woodworth, long time member of the KCRPCA, and he came bearing gifts. Larry brought a very early edition of the Der Sportwagen, early enough that it was hand typed! That got me thinking about technology and how it changed the way we interact. Typewriting took the place of hand writing. Printing presses took the place of the mimiograph. Color took the place of black and white. And now online has taken the place of print in a big way. If we were talking cars, Porsche has progressed also. The flat four grew to the flat six, the 2.7 to the 4.0, seat- of-the-pants braking became ABS and on and on. In most cases, I think it was for the best. The Der Sportwagen went to full online publishing four (!) years ago, and it was a bold move for us at the time. The move incorporated videos, slide shows and links to advertisers, taking the newsletter to the next level. Since then I have been contacted by other editors looking to improve their newsletters. We must be doing something right! This summer, that thought was confirmed. We received the highest honor a PCA newsletter can receive. We won the Betty Jo Turner award for the Best Overall Newsletter, beating out 144 other regions. I'm very proud of all the contributors and editors that supply the great content. I'm the lucky one that gets to make it all look good. (Well, me, a bottle of wine and a few late evenings.) I guess it is true, that the only constant is change. Even our KCRPCA board will be changing this fall. We need you to vote. - STAN
