their once glossy finish from many a human
touch. Rodolfo's wrapped steering wheel
was frayed from hundreds of twisty road
turns. Both Porsche's spindly stick shifters
poked their selves up from the transmission
tunnel looking as frail as a new planted sap-
ling. On top of the stick was perched a little
black orb that fit perfectly into the palm of
my hand. Each car was tattooed with vari-
ous Porsche event or club honoring stickers
and badges, reminders of events and dates
that are part of each car's history.
Cars like Allen's and Rodolfo's are exten-
sions of their driving souls. Each man, with
eyes closed, could ease behind their steering
wheels and sense where each knob or lever
was, and how it should be placed. It would
offer up the same feelings one would expe-
rience as if stepping back in to your child-
hood room, absorbing all of the aromas and
touches familiar from years of exposure.
After the shoot, we sat down on antique
blue airport waiting room seats, nestled
be-neath the wing of a shinny TWA DC-3.
There we picked up on our earlier conversa-
tion.
