30 POWDER COATING, November 2016 The leading index will be subject to re- vision when the other components are added next month. Paints and coatings technologies evolving as market eyes steady growth WELLESLEY, Mass.—The global market for paints and coatings is fore- cast to increase from nearly $132.2 bil- lion in 2016 to $164.1 billion in 2021, reflecting a 5-year CAGR of 4.4 per- cent. This is according to Global Mar- kets and Advanced Technologies for Paints and Coatings, a report from BCC Research, an industrial market research firm. As a segment, waterborne technol- ogy is expected to grow from $37.2 bil- lion in 2016 to nearly $48.7 billion in 2021, demonstrating a five-year CAGR of 5.5 percent. Powder/emerging coat- ing technologies as a segment should total nearly $32.7 billion in 2016 and grow to $46.8 billion in 2021, a five- year CAGR of 7.5 percent. The coatings market remains healthy, and growth appears sustainable over the long term. Legislation is forcing the market to evolve technologically, and products and formulations could change dramatically during the forecast period. Consumers are driving in- creased demand in diverse areas such as performance, ease of application, sus- tainability, quality, functionality, and environmental properties. Continuous improvement in environmental perfor- mance suggests a future in which the functionality of coatings will be en- hanced and transformed from conven- tional areas of protection and aesthetics to meet additional, more specific de- mands. Manufacturing sector's economic activity expands in September TEMPE, Ariz.—Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in September following one month of contraction in August, and the overall economy grew for the 88th consecutive month, say the nation's supply execu- tives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. The report is based on data compiled from purchasing and supply executives nationwide. The September PMI registered 51.5 percent, an increase of 2.1 percentage points from the August reading of 49.4 percent. The New Orders Index regis- tered 55.1 percent, an increase of 6 per- centage points from the August reading of 49.1 percent. The Production Index registered 52.8 percent, 3.2 percentage points higher than the August reading of 49.6 percent. The Employment Index registered 49.7 percent, an in- crease of 1.4 percentage points from the August reading of 48.3 percent. Inven- tories of raw materials registered 49.5 percent, an increase of 0.5 percentage point from the August reading of 49 percent. The Prices Index registered 53 percent in September, the same reading as in August, indicating higher raw ma- terials prices for the seventh consecutive month. Manufacturing expanded in September as the PMI registered 51.5 percent, an increase of 2.1 percentage points from the August reading of 49.4 percent, in- dicating growth in manufacturing fol- lowing one month of contraction. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is gener- ally expanding; below 50 percent indi- cates that it is generally contracting. A PMI above 43.2 percent, over a period of time, generally indicates an expan- sion of the overall economy. The past relationship between the PMI and the overall economy indicates that the average PMI for January through September (50.9 percent) corresponds to a 2.4 percent increase in real gross do- mestic product (GDP) on an annual- ized basis. In addition, if the PMI for September (51.5 percent) is annualized, it corresponds to a 2.6 percent increase in real GDP annually.
