The Huli reside in the Tari Valley, breathtakingly scenic with its magnificent mountain forests and roaring waterfalls. Their's is a hunter/gatherer society, with the men hunting and the women foraging and gathering. The women are exceptional farmers and grow sweet potatoes, corn, cabbage, and maniocs. The first Westerners to visit the region were impressed to find vast valleys of carefully planned gardens and irrigation ditches. Traditionally, the Huli are animists who abide by strict ritualized offerings to appease the spirits of their ancestors and to combat sickness and misfortune, which are thought to be the work of witchcraft and sorcery.
