S P O R T I N G C L A S S I C S • 155 of reckoning arrived. We had put two of the pointers down in a long stretch of pines interspersed with broomsedge that made a long, slow, half-circle around a big cypress bay. The dogs began working the ground between two food plots when both pointers caught wind at the same time and froze side- by-side with their noses stuck into a small copse of honeysuckle. I dropped a couple of shells into the little hammergun and held the muzzles high as we made our approach. I think that the first English-stock cockers that I ever saw working birds were here at Wynfield many years ago. I instantly fell in love with the "tiny tornados" and have remained so to this day. It only took a few minutes to gather my things, just some chaps and boots and the little 28. Within five minutes we were off to the nether reaches of the place for a dry run before my buddies arrived. Deep in the longleaf and loblolly, the time afternoon would prove that it was still true. D. J. had a bevy of beautiful, well-trained and stylish dogs with him. The headliners were the pointers: Brook, Doc, and Judge, and the setters: Babe, Gus, and Sport. The spice in this dish was provided by the English cockers who did flushing duty. Ben was black and Jase was white, and there wasn't a bird they couldn't put up when the command was given. The two were absolutely unbeatable bird-finders, too! The TV room in Wynfield's comfortable lodge is where you can relax after your day's hunt, sip a glass or two of aged whiskey, and visit with old friends or make some new ones. Below: From the high chair in a Jeep CJ7, the hunters can watch the hunt unfold in a picturesque woodland interlaced with creeks and small wetlands. Opposite: Built in the mid-'90s the rustic lodge is the centerpiece of more than 2,000 acres of prime hunting land.
