We visit the La Cambe German cemetery
where over 21,000 German soldiers are bur-
ied. It is estimated that over 80% of them
were less than 20 years old, and you think
about how their mothers back home must
have felt to have raised children in such fu-
tility.
The American cemetery overlooks the
westernmost end of Omaha Beach. It is
built in the form of a cross, with 10 sections
of graves, five on each side of the main mall.
Guillaume tells us that within the cemetery
are 307 unknown dead. We see several,
their inscriptions reading, "Known But to
God." There are three Medal of Honor re-
cipients, including Theodore Roosevelt Jr.,
son of the former president, who led the
invasion at Utah Beach, and famously said,
upon realizing they had landed at the wrong
place, "We'll start the war from right here."
