My advice to ladies is, unless you are a
celebrity yourself or intent on entering
the fashion contest, wear sensible shoes –
or carry a pair for going home. This is a big
racecourse when you start exploring.
You might be surprised at the level of
dressing up that you see at Flemington.
Casual dress is accepted in the General
Admission areas, but these days it is more
the exception than the rule. Even so, you
should dress with an eye to the weather.
Spring is capricious in Melbourne. When
fine it is perfection. If very warm and
windy it can change, with a storm. If wet
it can be simply cold. If cloudy, the sun
can secretly burn. A hat, for either sex, is
a smart idea. If you back the winner it will
be all worthwhile. If you don't, try danc-
ing all night and then come back for more.
