SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuar y Celebrates 25 Years T he 2017 HBO series "Big Little Lies," which was filmed at loca- tions throughout Monterey County, won eight Emmys during the annual awards ceremony on September 17. Nicole Kidman took home outstand- ing lead actress in a limited series or movie honors for her role as Celeste Wright, while Laura Dern earned the nod for outstanding suppor ting actress in a limited series. Alexander Skarsgard won for outstanding support- ing actor in a limited series or movie. In addition to being recognized for directing, costumes, casting and music, the David E. Kelley drama won this year's outstanding limited series award. "Big Little Lies" was nominated for 16 Emmys overall. Award-Winning HBO Drama Features Monterey County C ommunity members cel- ebrated the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanct- uar y's 25th anniversar y during a September gala at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Congressman Jimmy Panetta and former U.S. Representative Sam Farr spoke to attendees at the sold-out event, discussing the sanctuar y's significance to the regional economy and identity. They also highlighted steps that suppor ters can take to suppor t sanctuar y protec- tions. Former Secretar y of Defense and CIA Director Leon Panetta was honored for his ongoing commitment to ocean conser vation and for his role in establishing the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuar y. The evening also included a dinner featur- ing local, sustainable ingredients, plus an auc- tion and a special reception for local spon- sors. Gala proceeds will suppor t Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuar y programs. Jacks Monterey, the remodeled lobby restaurant and bar at Portola Hotel & Spa, has earned a 2017 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The accolade honors restaurants offering at least 90 thoughtful wine selections, including an array by quality producers and options that reflect the price and style of the corresponding food menu. At Jacks Monterey, that means a list where 30 per- cent of the wines come from Monterey County purveyors, such as Boekenoogen and Hahn, along with Monterey County chardonnay from 10SPAN on draft. The brand's wines showcase cool-climate grapes grown on California's Central Coast. "We are very honored to have received the 2017 Wine Spectator Award of Excel- lence," said Brian Hein, Portola Hotel & Spa's food and beverage director in a statement about the recognition. "This award shows that our wine list is not only diverse with a variety of selections, but is also designed to accommodate the most discriminating connois- seur's palate while simultaneously satisfying all wine lovers."
