This attic conversion to a second floor posed
challenges due to the low ceiling height—the
plate height was only four and a half feet. The
homeowners knew as their children began to
grow they would need to raise the roof, and
wanted to have the space flow with the
architecture of the house. By raising the
ceiling height, the designer gained more
natural light and created a child friendly
space: bright, beachy, fun, easy to clean, and
functional. An entry area was created with
cabinetry on both sides with colored stained
wood tiles behind the vanity to give the
impression of nautical flags. Together with the
blue stained ceiling and ship lap, the space
has a fun nautical air. —R.O.
