hot shots news + notes from the state of hockey tagline goes here "Like" Minnesota Hockey Journal and follow @mnhockeyjournal "He will be remembered for his easy-going manner and his willingness to help other people," wrote Tim Morris, Minnesota Hockey director of high school girls. "He was gracious in all that he did." Party in the USHL Goin' with the Flow It may still be early in the season, but six St. Cloud State men's hockey players are already sporting spring playoff salads. Tim Daly, Nic Dowd, Ben Hanowski (Little Falls), Nick Jensen (Rogers), David Morley and Cory Thorson (Crystal) have all vowed to not cut their hair until their season's over. When all's said and done, their hair will be donated to Locks of Love, a nonprofit providing hair pieces to those with medical conditions who cannot otherwise afford them. RIP Sellnow Longtime teacher, coach and athletics director Ron Sellnow passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, after battling lymphoma. Sellnow, who volunteered for USA Hockey, started coaching and teaching in the Hopkins School District in 1964. He retired as the high school's athletics director in 1999. 06 Warroad Youth Hockey product Gigi Marvin starred for the Gophers and Team USA. Hockeytown USA We know that Sports Illustrated gave that honor to St. Paul a few years back, but younger residents of the State of Hockey might not realize that tiny Warroad, tucked away in the northwest corner of the state, is the original holder of that title. The hockey-mad community of 1,700 was host to the senior Warroad Lakers from 1947-97 as that storied team, founded by the iconic Cal Marvin, won numerous championships over the years, most notably three Allen Cups in 1994, 1995 and 1996. The names of the Christians (Gordy, Roger, Bill and David), Henry Boucha and Gigi Marvin have dotted the rosters of U.S. Olympic Teams over the years and have helped bring Gold Medal success in 1960 (Roger, Bill) and 1980 (David). The high school Warriors have made their mark as well, starting in 1948, with the boys making 21 state tournament appearances while taking home the big prize at the Class 1A level in 1994, 1996, 2003 and 2005. Not to be outdone, the lady Warriors have made five trips to Xcel Energy Center during their short history, emerging as Class 1A champions in both 2010 and 2011. Gigi Marvin, a lady alumnus, was an All-American at the University of Minnesota and has helped the U.S. win three Gold Medals at the World Women's Championships and a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Visitors to the X can see an exhibit on Warroad, the original Hockeytown USA, at Gate Three, and on the way there, stop and view the Tommy Williams presentation in the Hockey Lodge. –Roger Godin, Curator, Minnesota Wild minnesotahockeyjournal.com // December.2012 photos: FHIT Players, university of minnesota Faulk Finding His Stride South St. Paul Youth Hockey Association product Justin Faulk is among the American Hockey League's (AHL) scoring leaders as a defenseman. The young blueliner and 2011 NCAA National Champion with the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs is currently honing his skills with the Charlotte Checkers. Faulk donated some of his time this past summer by skating with his old youth hockey association through the B23 Foundation, who awarded Squirt player Blake Schlosser as its first official scholarathlete recipient. A handful of Minnesotans are among the United States Hockey League's scoring leaders early on this season: Taylor Cammarata (Plymouth/ Minnesota), Justin Kloos (Lakeville/ Minnesota), Zach Stepan (Hastings/Ohio State), Dom Toninato (Duluth/UMD) and Eric Scheid (Coon Rapids/Uncomitted) are all off to good starts, averaging more than a point per game.
