TCA 211 3 credits 3 periods Introduction to Tribal Cases and Codes Introduction to the process of legal research. Reading and briefing cases using the Issue-Rule-Analysis-Conclusion (IRAC) approach, legal analysis of cases and codes, elements of a legal memorandum with emphasis on legal writing skills. Prerequisites or Corequisites: (ENG101 and TCA101) or permission of Department Chairperson or Program Director. TCA 215 3 credits 3 periods Evidence for the Tribal Court Advocate Examination of the most commonly encountered evidentiary issues encountered by advocates in the tribal courts. Evidentiary foundations, exclusion of witnesses, recognition of hearsay, admissibility of character and prior acts evidence, privileged communications; authentication. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in TCA101. TCA 225 3 credits 3 periods Legal Writing for the Tribal Court Advocate Development of practical and analytical skills used in basic legal research. Culminates in writing a legal memorandum. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in (ENG101 and TCA211), or permission of Department Chairperson or Program Director. TCA 298AB 2 credits 2 periods Special Projects Organized and tailored around the interests and needs of the individual student. Structured to provide an atmosphere of individualized research and study paralleled by professional expertise and guidance. Professional-type facilities and equipment available for student use. Allows the best aspects of independent study and individualized learning to be combined to maximize student development. Prerequisites: Permission of Program Director or Instructor.
